# The Invertebrate Aisle at the Fish Store, Sorted by What Actually Survives

A cherry shrimp costs about the same as a cup of coffee and can live a year and a half in a stable, cycled tank with no copper in it. Put that same shrimp in with an angelfish and it lives until the angelfish notices it. That gap, between the animal’s actual requirements and the tank someone already owns, is where most aquarium invertebrates die, and it is the whole reason this guide exists. The invertebrate aisle sells shrimp, snails, crabs, crayfish, clams, and occasionally things with beaks and eight arms, and almost nothing on the shelf tells you which of those is a janitor, which is a pet, and which is a hostage.

So here is the map. What these animals are, what they do in a tank, which ones forgive a beginner, which ones need their own glass box and no roommates, and how to work out which category the animal in front of you belongs to before your card is out.

## What counts as an aquarium invertebrate?

An invertebrate is an animal with no backbone. In practice, for the aquarium hobby, that means anything in the tank that is not a fish, not a plant, and not a bacterial colony: no spine, no fins, usually a shell or an exoskeleton doing the structural work instead.

That definition covers a genuinely strange spread of animals, so keepers sort them by shape and behavior instead of by taxonomy. The practical categories:

-   **Snails:** nerites, which graze algae hard and cannot breed in fresh water; mystery snails, which are big, visible, and have actual personality; and the pest species that arrive as eggs on a plant leaf and are still with you three years later.
-   **Crabs:** almost all of them semi-terrestrial. Fiddler crabs and similar species need land, not just water, and drown in a tank that is only a tank.
-   **Crayfish:** freshwater lobsters, essentially. Armored, territorial, opinionated, and very good at climbing airline tubing.
-   **Clams and mussels:** filter feeders that sit buried and do almost nothing visible, which is either the appeal or the problem.
-   **The odd end:** brine shrimp kept as a novelty, jellyfish, and octopuses. Real animals with real requirements that most home setups cannot meet.

One thing unites nearly all of them and drives most of the care advice further down: they molt. An exoskeleton does not grow, so the animal periodically walks out of its old shell and spends hours or days soft, vulnerable, and hiding. You will find the empty shells and assume something died. ## Clean-up crew vs. true pet: what’s the difference?

People buy invertebrates for two entirely separate reasons, and the aisle does not distinguish between them at all.

The first reason is labor. Algae grows on glass, driftwood, and slow-growing plant leaves, uneaten food rots in the substrate, and a grazing animal handles both without a water change. That is the clean-up crew: nerite snails on the glass, a colony of cherry shrimp picking through the moss, an amano shrimp working over a patch of hair algae. You are buying a small, self-directed maintenance service, and you are mostly not looking at it.

The second reason is the animal itself. A mystery snail with an orange foot cruising the front glass is something you actually watch. A crayfish rearranging its cave every night is a pet with habits. An octopus is a pet with a mind, opinions, and an escape plan. These animals are the point of the tank, not the tank’s cleaning staff.

The distinction matters because it decides everything downstream. A clean-up crew animal has to fit into a tank designed for someone else, which means it has to tolerate your existing fish, your existing temperature, and your existing feeding schedule. A true pet gets the tank built around it: the right footprint, the right lid, the right water, the right neighbors, which is frequently no neighbors at all.

## Which invertebrates are easiest for a first tank?

Four animals do most of the beginner work in freshwater, and they are easy for different reasons worth understanding.

### Cherry shrimp

Cherry shrimp are the default recommendation and deserve it. They are small, bright red against green plants, entirely peaceful, and they breed readily in ordinary tap-water-parameters tanks without any intervention from you. That last part is the real value: a colony that reproduces absorbs the losses that a beginner inevitably causes. ### Ghost shrimp

Ghost shrimp are cheap, transparent, and sold in bulk as feeders, which means they arrive stressed and are often held in poor conditions at the store. Expect losses in the first week that have nothing to do with your tank. ### Mystery snails

Mystery snails (_Pomacea bridgesii_) are the invertebrate I hand to someone who says they find shrimp boring. They are golf-ball sized, come in gold, blue, ivory, and near-black, and they are constantly doing something: climbing to the surface to breathe through a siphon, dropping off the glass, hoovering a sinking wafer. They do not eat healthy plants, which separates them from most other big freshwater snails. They need calcium in the water for shell health and enough food that they are not starving between fish feedings. ### Nerite snails

Nerites are the best algae eaters in the freshwater hobby, full stop. They will clear green spot algae off glass that nothing else touches. Their selling point is that they cannot reproduce in fresh water: their larvae need brackish or salt conditions, so the population never explodes. They will lay hard white eggs on driftwood and glass anyway, which never hatch and are irritating to scrape off. That is the trade, and most keepers take it.

What makes all four forgiving is the same thing: none of them need a heater setting you don’t already have, a food you don’t already own, or a tank you don’t already own. Start there.

## Which invertebrates need a species-only tank?

A species-only tank means one kind of animal and nothing else, sometimes one individual and nothing else. Some invertebrates need this, and the store will not tell you.

**Crayfish.** A crayfish is a predator with two large claws, a taste for anything slow-moving, and a strong drive to claim territory. It will catch sleeping fish. It will kill and eat other crayfish, particularly a freshly molted one, and particularly in a tank without enough separate caves. It also outgrows the tidy little setup it was sold for. **Coral banded shrimp.** The red-and-white saltwater shrimp with the outsized pincers is territorial toward other shrimp, including its own species unless the pair was introduced as a bonded couple. **Fiddler crabs.** The most consistently mis-sold animal in the aisle. Fiddler crabs need brackish water, not fresh, and they need dry land they can climb out onto. A fiddler crab in a full freshwater aquarium is slowly drowning, and it takes long enough that nobody connects the death to the cause. What they need is a paludarium: shallow brackish water, a real beach, a lid. Every one of those animals is running its species’ standard program. A crayfish claims a patch of floor and defends it, and its claws reach a good deal further than the gap between two caves you judged to be far apart; a sleeping tetra drifting over that patch at 2am is within reach. A coral banded shrimp treats a second shrimp as a rival for the same rock and settles the question in one night. A fiddler crab has to get out of the water to breathe, so it climbs the silicone corner, finds no beach, and drowns over a period of weeks. ## What do aquarium invertebrates eat?

Three feeding strategies cover nearly everything you’ll keep, and knowing which one your animal uses tells you whether it can survive on tank leftovers or needs deliberate feeding.

**Grazers** rasp biofilm and algae off surfaces continuously. Nerite snails are the clearest example. A grazer in a brand-new, spotlessly clean tank is in trouble, because the food is the film you cannot see yet. **Scavengers** eat anything soft: leftover fish food, decaying plant matter, dead tank mates, and biofilm. Shrimp, crayfish, and most crabs fall here. Scavengers get a bad reputation as garbage disposals, which is unfair and also dangerous. They do not thrive on garbage. ## What tank setup do invertebrates actually need?

The single most important sentence in invertebrate keeping: **copper kills them.** Copper-based medications, widely used to treat ich and other fish parasites, are lethal to shrimp, snails, and crustaceans at concentrations fish tolerate fine. Check the ingredients on anything you dose. Check the ingredients on plant fertilizers. Copper also binds to substrate and silicone and can leach back out afterward, so a tank that has been treated with a copper medication is not reliably safe for invertebrates even after a water change. If you keep invertebrates, you need a separate hospital tank for treating fish, or you accept that treating your display tank means losing your shrimp.

Beyond that, five things:

-   **Stability over perfection.** Invertebrates handle a steady, slightly-off parameter far better than a perfect one that swings. Sudden shifts in temperature, hardness, or total dissolved solids during a large water change kill shrimp that were fine an hour earlier. Match new water to tank water, and change less, more often.
-   **Calcium and hardness.** Shells and exoskeletons are built from minerals in the water. Aim for 6 to 8 dGH and 2 to 5 dKH for _Neocaridina_ shrimp and for snails, which is also where a stable pH between 7.0 and 7.8 tends to sit on its own. Below about 4 dGH you get pitted snail shells and failed molts, and a crustacean that gets stuck halfway out of its old shell does not recover. -   **Hiding places, especially for molting.** Dense moss, cholla wood, leaf litter, a pile of caves for territorial species. A newly molted animal is defenseless and needs somewhere its tank mates cannot reach it.
-   **Intake protection.** Baby shrimp go into a hang-on-back filter intake and do not come out. A pre-filter sponge over the intake solves it entirely and costs almost nothing.
-   **A lid that actually seals.** Crabs, crayfish, and some larger shrimp climb. They climb heater cords, airline tubing, and silicone corners. Mystery snails go over the rim and dry out on the floor. A glass lid with the cord gaps blocked is not optional for the climbing species.

Which brings up the assumption behind half the failed invertebrate purchases: that the empty space in an established fish tank is automatically available. It isn’t. Cherry shrimp want 68 to 78°F and breed best around 72 to 76°F, so a tank held at 82°F for discus is running them hot: they will be short-lived and the colony will not hold its numbers. Ammonia and nitrite have to read zero, and nitrate wants to stay under 20 ppm for a colony that actually breeds, which a heavily stocked community tank rarely manages. ## Will fish eat my invertebrates (or the other way around)?

Probably, and it depends almost entirely on relative size.

The rule that holds across the hobby: if the invertebrate fits in the fish’s mouth, it will eventually go in the fish’s mouth. Not necessarily today. A large gourami or angelfish may ignore adult cherry shrimp for weeks and then discover that they are food, and once a fish learns this it does not unlearn it. Baby shrimp are eaten by nearly everything, including fish that never touch adults, which is why a shrimp colony in a community tank stays small forever while the same colony alone in a five-gallon explodes.

What generally works with dwarf shrimp: small peaceful fish with small mouths. Ember tetras, chili rasboras, otocinclus, most small corydoras, pygmy species generally. What does not: cichlids of any size, most barbs, gouramis, bettas (individually variable, and the variable is which betta you got), goldfish, loaches with a taste for snails, and anything sold as “semi-aggressive.”

The predation runs the other direction too, and people underestimate it. Crayfish and most crabs will take a fish that is sleeping, slow, injured, or simply unlucky. Long-finned fish are especially at risk because a betta’s trailing fins put the fish within reach of the claws while the fish itself thinks it’s clear. Even large shrimp will pick at a sick or dying fish, and keepers often see this and conclude the shrimp did the killing. Usually the fish was already going.

Snails are the exception worth naming: nothing you keep is likely to be hurt by a snail, but a snail is very much at risk from a puffer, a loach, or an assassin snail, all three of which eat them enthusiastically.

The honest planning move is to decide which population you care about more. A tank can be a shrimp tank with a couple of tiny fish in it, or a fish tank with a few shrimp that you accept as a slowly depleting resource. Trying to have both at full strength usually means watching one of them dwindle and not being able to say when it started.

## What are the more unusual invertebrates people keep?

Past the shrimp and snails, the hobby gets stranger and the honesty requirement gets higher.

**Freshwater clams.** They bury themselves, filter, and are invisible for months. The problem is that a dead clam in a substrate is a large decaying animal you cannot see, and it can crash a tank’s water quality before you find it. **Bamboo shrimp.** Big, mild-mannered, and genuinely nice to watch when placed in real flow with their fans open. They’re a rewarding pick for someone with a mature planted tank and a filter output worth sitting in front of, and a slow starvation case for someone who buys one for a low-flow nano.

**Sea monkeys.** These are brine shrimp, sold in a kit as a novelty pet, and they are a real animal with a real, short lifespan rather than a toy. As a first “keeping” experience for a child they are honestly not bad: the hatch is genuinely interesting, the failure mode is not a suffering vertebrate, and the whole thing runs its course in weeks. **Jellyfish.** This is where the hobby stops being casual. Jellyfish cannot be kept in a standard aquarium at all, because a normal filter intake will pull a jellyfish in and shred it. They need a purpose-built circular kreisel tank that keeps them suspended in a gentle rotating current, plus regular feeding on live or prepared plankton-scale food, plus a supply chain for that food. **Octopuses.** An octopus is one of the most intelligent invertebrates alive, and keeping one honestly is a short, demanding, and often sad project. Most commonly available species live one to two years, and a good fraction of that is already spent when you buy one. They need pristine marine water, a species-only tank with a sealed and weighted lid, live or fresh food they will actually accept, and constant enrichment, and they die shortly after reproducing regardless of what you do. ## How much does it cost to keep aquarium invertebrates?

The animals are usually the cheapest part, and the number that matters is what surrounds them.

At the low end, a cherry shrimp colony in a planted ten-gallon runs roughly $120 to $200 all in. The tank itself is $15 to $25, a sponge or small hang-on-back filter $10 to $25, a 50-watt heater $15 to $25, a light good enough to grow plants $25 to $60, substrate $20 to $30, and a liquid test kit $30 to $35. The shrimp are the cheap part: standard reds run $2 to $4 each, and ten of them will get you a self-sustaining colony. After that, ongoing spend is about $30 to $50 a year. A $10 tub of shrimp pellets feeds a small colony for six months or more, a jar of remineralizer is $15 to $20 and lasts a year in soft water, and the heater and filter together draw a few dollars a month. What moves the number up:

-   **Tank size and footprint.** A single crayfish needs meaningful floor area, and tank cost rises with volume faster than most people expect once you add the stand, the lid, and the larger heater.
-   **Whether the setup is a tank at all.** Fiddler crabs need land plus brackish water, which means play sand at $10 to $15 a bag, a box of marine salt mix at $20 to $30, a refractometer at $25 to $40 (skip the $8 swing-arm hydrometer, it drifts), and a twenty-gallon long to build the beach in. Call it $200 to $300 for a paludarium that works, against maybe $80 for the plain ten-gallon of fresh water the crab was sold for. Semi-terrestrial animals cost more because they need two habitats.
-   **Salt water.** Anything marine, coral banded shrimp included, adds $150 to $300 over the freshwater equivalent once you count a powerhead, a heater rated for the volume, the refractometer, and a bucket of salt mix that runs $50 to $70 and mixes about 150 gallons. The shrimp itself is $25 to $40. Marine test kits are another $50 to $80 a year.
-   **Species rarity and color.** Selectively bred shrimp color morphs and high-grade lines cost multiples of a standard cherry shrimp, and the price gap is about breeding work and consistency, not about the animal being harder to keep.
-   **Purpose-built equipment.** A desktop jellyfish kreisel starts around $200 to $400 and the hobbyist units built for a real display run $700 to $2,000 and up, before the moon jellies themselves at roughly $20 to $40 each and a plankton or jelly-food subscription at $15 to $30 a month. An octopus wants a 55-gallon-plus marine system with a locking lid, which is $800 to $1,500 built out, plus $30 to $60 a month in live crabs, shrimp, and frozen food for an animal that will be dead inside a year. These are the price of a whole second tank, not the price of an accessory, and the food line keeps drawing every month after the build is paid for.

The cost people fail to plan for is the hospital tank. If you keep invertebrates in your display tank, you cannot treat sick fish in there with copper-based medication, so eventually you need a second, small, bare-bottom tank with its own heater and sponge filter. A ten-gallon, a 50-watt heater, a sponge filter, and an air pump come to about $50 to $70 together, and it stores flat in a closet between uses. Budget for it at the start rather than at the moment you need it, because the moment you need it is a bad time to be shopping.

## When to call a vet

Invertebrate veterinary care is a small, specialized field, and the honest first move when something looks wrong in a shrimp or snail tank is a test kit rather than a phone call. Check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temperature, and hardness, and account for everything you have put in the water over the last month, fertilizer and fish medication included.

These are the signs that point at the water and at your husbandry:

-   A shrimp colony that all goes still at once, or gathers at the surface on the same afternoon. Collective behavior on a single day is a parameter event: a large water change, a new dose of something, a heater stuck on or off.
-   A shrimp stuck halfway out of its old shell, or dead with a visible white gap at the neck, which keepers have long called the white ring of death. That is a failed molt, and it sends you back to minerals and to how fast the water changed rather than to a treatment.
-   Snail shells going chalky, pitted, or paper-thin at the growing edge. That is soft water and months of it, and the fix is calcium and hardness, not medicine.
-   A crayfish that refuses food for weeks, drops limbs, or comes out of a molt soft and stays soft days later.
-   An ammonia reading with no obvious source in a tank that has a clam in it. Go and find the clam.

The call that is genuinely worth making is about the fish living alongside them. White spots, clamped fins, ulcers, fungal fluff, rapid breathing at the surface: that is an aquatic vet’s conversation, and an invertebrate tank changes it. Tell them, unprompted, every shrimp, snail, crab, and crayfish in that water, because it rules out an entire shelf of copper-based products they would otherwise reach for first. Tell them whether the animal can be moved to a bare-bottom hospital tank, since that single fact often decides what is possible. Aquatic and exotic practices are thin on the ground in most areas, so find the nearest one and save the number while nothing is wrong. ## Which aquarium invertebrate is right for your tank?

Work through it in this order and the answer usually falls out.

**Start with the tank you already have.** Under ten gallons, planted, no fish or only tiny ones: cherry shrimp, and you’ll be watching a growing colony within a few months. A standard community tank with peaceful small fish: nerite snails for algae, a mystery snail or two if you want something to watch, and a shrimp population you treat as ornamental rather than as a breeding project. A tank with anything cichlid-shaped, barb-shaped, or over a few inches with an opportunistic mouth: snails only, and even then, watch what the fish does the first week.

**Then be honest about time.** A clean-up crew is close to zero additional work. Filter feeders need targeted feeding several times a week, forever. A crayfish needs a dedicated tank and regular protein. Jellyfish and octopuses need daily attention and a food supply chain, and they punish a week of inattention in a way a snail never will.

**Then check the water you actually pour in.** Very soft water is a real obstacle for snails and molting crustaceans, and remineralizing is a routine you either commit to or you don’t. Very hard water is the opposite problem and rules out a couple of the fussier shrimp species. Test before you buy, not after your first failed molt.

**Then check what’s in the medicine cabinet.** If you’re the kind of keeper who reaches for a broad treatment at the first white spot, and that treatment is copper-based, you are not currently an invertebrate keeper. Fix that first: get a hospital tank, or switch your approach, or skip the invertebrates.

Where that leaves most people: nerite snails if you want the algae gone and nothing else, cherry shrimp if you want a small self-sustaining population that rewards a mature planted tank, a mystery snail if you want a visible animal with a bit of character and no risk to anyone. Jellyfish and octopuses suit almost nobody, and the keepers who do them well tend to have marine experience, a spare room, and a tolerance for an animal that dies on its own schedule no matter how good you are.

The species that will do best in your tank is the one whose requirements you already meet by accident. Everything else is a project, and projects are fine as long as you know you’re starting one.
